From Firefly to 9-1-1: Lone Star, Gina Torres recalls her 40-year career

Gina Torres has fought for independence, been a great lawyer, and more throughout decades as an actor. While most recognized for her role as Zoë Washburne in Firefly, she has been acting professionally since 1992. Law & Order, One Life To Live, and Xena: Warrior Princess were her early roles. Torres told EW she was a pirate queen, accomplished attorney, corset-wearing freedom fighter, and more.

An unexpectedly large audience kept Firefly popular. After a one-season cult hit, Serenity was adapted into a 2005 film to complete the story. Although the performers felt the space western was ended after 14 episodes in 2003, Joss Whedon persisted.

Torres fit into Hercules as pirate queen Nebula at the right time. In her 20s, she explored New Zealand's beauty while playing a badass. "Sidebar, I was a huge [Greek] mythology freak growing up," she says.

Cleopatra 2525, Torres' rare treasure, featured corsets and lasers. After plastic surgery difficulties suspend her in time, Cleo (Jennifer Sky), a 20th-century exotic dancer, fights for humanity in the future. Cleo awakens in 2525 to join Hel's liberation fighters.

Suits was Torres' first series regular show that "had a life." after 20 years in the industry. “There's an actor's life for you,” Torres offers. The courtroom drama starred Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams for nine seasons, with Torres as Jessica Pearson for seven.

Torres assumed she'd left Jessica Pearson after leaving Suits, but Pearson was conceived. Jessica was part of Suits' core and involved in its complex story lines, but Torres saw her as the least developed figure in her personal life.

"It was elegant horror," Torres agrees with Fishburne on Hannibal. She described several scenes as hand-painted, feeling like Phyllis "Bella" Crawford, Jack Crawford's wife, played by Fishburne. "It's how Hannibal sees the gore that we would, within the real world, believe to be disturbing," says.

Torres bravely joined 9-1-1: Lone Star's "moving freight train" despite its challenges. The show's high-octane rescue scenes were difficult to film, and she was replacing Liv Tyler, who portrayed Michelle Blake and left after season one. "The entire cast was incredibly welcoming to me," she adds.
