10 Scenic Spots to Watch The April 2024 total Solar Eclipse

One renowned landmark in totality's path is Niagara Falls on the U.S.-Canada border. The U.S. side's finest view of an obscured sun 46 degrees above Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the three waterfalls, will be to the southwest. Even on good days, access is difficult, and the eclipse will certainly be busy.

NIAGARA FALLS

One of two national parks, Hot Springs, is small. Bathhouse Row's 1840s bathhouses and 47 hot springs at Hot Springs Mountain's foot are protected. Hiking trails exceed 30 miles. Hot Springs welcomes eclipse day traffic. 

HOT SPRINGS NATIONAL PARK

Cuyahoga Valley National Park, home to the Ohio & Erie Canalway and the Cuyahoga River, will be the second and final U.S. National Park. "It's the only national park in the area, and it's going to be very popular," Eclipse Over Cleveland astronomer Jay Ryan told Space.com. The plans are unknown, but park officials predict considerable traffic and long delays on local roads.

CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

New York's Finger Lakes offer lakefront views and totality on water for wide-angle photographers. Be careful—totality only crosses the northernmost regions of some of the 11 lakes. Hotel Canandaigua will host a Lights Out Weekend and Lake House on Canandaigua will honor the eclipse. 

FINGER LAKES

Illinois' Shawnee National Forest never sells out of camping sites. This massive forest spans 289,000 acres between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Free primitive camping outside recreation areas is allowed year-round. Limestone outcroppings and rivers make it lovely.

SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST

The largest contiguous U.S. protected natural region is New York's Adirondack Mountains. Clear skies in April are rare, but if you're prepared to take a chance, you can stargaze in the dark.

ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS

Kouchibouguac National Park will observe the last North American totality. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada designated it a Dark Sky Preserve for its sandy beaches, dunes, lagoons, salt marshes, and woods. Stargazing is common at Kouchibouguac, but eclipses are unknown. 

KOUCHIBOUGUAC NATIONAL PARK

Garner State Park in Uvalde County, Texas, is known for its bright sky north of Mexico, but also has additional attractions. The 1,700-acre (690 hectares) park lies in gorgeous Hill Country on the Frio River. Solar Eclipse Village will draw scientists, researchers, eclipse chasers, interactive exhibits, workshops, and more.

GARNER STATE PARK

Due to its length and proximity to the centerline, Inks Lake State Park is a hidden gem in Texas. Inks Lake's beautiful water is surrounded by colorful rocks. Buchanan Lake, 75 miles (120 km) northwest of Austin, provides RV sites, campers, cabins, and eclipse watching places.

Oklahoma is rarely mentioned as a destination for eclipse tourists, although the southeast, where totality is, has some intriguing rural options. Beavers Bend State Park on Broken Bow Lake and Mountain Fork River. Hiking, biking, fishing, waterskiing, and equestrian riding are available near Arkansas and Texas.
